The Blackout Defense: Fundamental Answers for Your Scheme

Today in football, offense are getting faster, more complex, and giving defenses more misdirection and window-dressing every week.

As a result, defenses need to be able to recognize alignments, communicate and get lined up quicker. If you can't get lined up correctly, you'll be giving up a lot of big plays, no matter how talented you are.

It's simple: You don't need a more complex playbook, you need a more efficient language.

Anderson University Defensive Coordinator Brett Hickman has coached at  both the FBS level, as well as the small high school level, and he developed the Blackout Defense System after seeing the kinds of challenges defense face at all levels of football.

It all comes down to how players read, recognize, and react, and how good you as a coach are at putting them in a position to be successful.

Whether you've got 30 players or over 100 players in your program, you'll gain a schematic advantage with The Blackout Defense: Fundamental Answers for Your Scheme

Part 1 - Philosophy and Offensive Recognition in the Blackout Defense

Topics covered include:

  • Why using an Odd Front system gives you more flexibility with your personnel, and more answers vs multiple offenses.
  • The "feet-to-eyes" technique for defenders that shuts down RPO reads for the QB
  • Understanding HOW to identify and communicate what your players are seeing on offense

Part 2 - Terminology and Rules in the Blackout Defense

Topics covered include:

  • Eliminate "Brain Farts" vs Motion: Use the "TBS" method (Travel, Bump, Spin) that dictates exactly who stays and who goes vs motion
  • Disguise your coverage like a pro: A simple teaching method for going 1 high to 2 high post-snap (and vice versa)
  • Apply Consistent Force vs the Run: Stop giving up the edge by implementing the 4 Universal Force Calls in the Blackout Defense
  • And more!

Part 3 - Okie and Tite Front Creepers

Topics covered include:

  • Make the O-Line's life miserable with slants and stunts: Most 3-4 teams get gashed because they are too static. Use slants and stunts to steal sacks and TFLs.
  • Slow down the RPO reads with the "Triangle": Give your apex players a clear read progression so they don't get sucked in by the RPO mesh
  • Shut down the Traditional Spread Run Game with the Tite Front: Eliminate the B-Gap bubble and keep the offensive line away from your linebackers to make more tackles!
  • And more!

Part 4 - Cover 3 and Adjustments

Topics covered include:

  • Don't get stuck in vanilla looks vs up-tempo teams: Use the color-coded rotation system to be able to quickly change the call vs no-huddle teams
  • Protect your linebackers from RPOs: Teach the 3 Buzz coverage so you can insert the safety directly in the Hook/Curl window and free up your LBs to play more aggressively against the run.
  • Simplify Communication for Young Players: Use the pre-built word associations (ex: "B" words like Brown and Blue for "Buzz" rotations) to help inexperienced players play faster and with fewer mental errors
  • And more!

Part 5 - Cover 4 Match Coverage and Tags

Topics covered include:

  • Eliminate Coverage Mismatches: Use the Alert check system to automatically switch between MOD, Meg, Palms and get to the perfect call no matter what the offense lines up in.
  • Use "Indicators" to get defenders to the run quicker: Avoid getting outnumbered in the box when you're playing quarters with simple keys that get your safeties to the ball in a hurry
  • Outnumber the Offense vs the Pass & Run Game: Simple but effective coverage checks vs any formation to get your players to the ball FAST
  • And more!

Part 6 - Even Fronts & Stunts

Topics covered include:

  • Create 1-on-1 Pass Rush Wins: 3-man stunts that are specifically designed to attack slide protections
  • Disguising Your 4-Man Fronts and Stunts: Use the "Pick Stunts" to line up in one gap and slant to another, forcing the offensive line to chase ghosts while your LBs remain clean
  • Avoid Horizontal Displacement: Use "short sticks" to create a firmer base that is harder for offensive linemen to wash or displace than traditional long stick stunts.
  • And more!

Really, really good stuff here. Haven't seen a Defensive System in years go in to this much detail on each specific call. Great nuisances. If you are an Odd-Front guy, this is a no-brainer.
